The north of Spain is rich in gastronomic traditions and therefore offers a wide range of opportunities to enjoy the unique cuisine of renowned Michelin-starred restaurants. On these tours, guests would be welcomed in Bilbao, with private transportation arranged to San Sebastián. The itinerary could include a visit “La Concha” Bay, named one of the best and most scenic beaches in the world for the past two years . Among the bay’s highlights is the Peine del Viento, or Wind Comb, a spectacular sculpture designed by Eduardo Chillida that juts out from the rocks by the shore. Guests would also ride the hundred-year-old Igeldo funicular railway for a picturesque ride to Mount Igueldo, where they will be rewarded with an excellent view of the town. The day ends with dinner at San Sebastián’s Akelarre, an exceptional establishment owned by celebrated chef Pedro Subijana that has retained its coveted three Michelin stars since 2006.
During the north of Spain food tour, guests can also visit the historic San Antón Bridge, a popular vantage point from which to see San Anton Church, a Gothic structure that was built more than 140 years ago, and the Arriaga Theater, an extraordinary building that resembles the Paris Opera. Guest will then dine at the one-Michelin-starred Nerua Guggenheim Bilbao, a titanium-clad restaurant located within the innovative cultural institution that represents “a magnificent example” of 20th-century architecture. The restaurant is overseen by Spanish chef Josean Ajila, who “conjures up modern cuisine and intricately developed dishes,” enhanced by his unique and innovative touches.
Other tour highlights include a visit the coastal fishing port of Santander in Cantabria, a city recognized for its beautiful bay. Tours includes a visit to the Palacete, or small palace, on the Quay and the Menéndez Pelayo Library, an extraordinary building known for its 41,500 volumes gifted to the town by writer and thinker Menéndez Pelayo. Other attractions include the Magdalena Palace and the Plaza Porticada, followed by a walk through Las Llamas Park, which features a wide variety of trees, birds and lakes. Afterward they would dine at El Serbal, an elegant restaurant serving northern Spanish food with a modern touch that earned its Michelin star offering “high quality cooking and top quality ingredients.” Dishes include Santander’s famed seafood, whose distinct flavor is owed to the chef’s impressive attention to detail.
The Michelin-Starred Restaurant Food Lovers’ Tour in northern Spain also includes a visit the city of Leon, whose history dates back to the first century of Roman occupation, to visit one of its main attractions, the San Marcos Monastery, now converted to a grand, luxury hotel. Guest can also visit the magnificent Leon Cathedral, built on the site of 2nd century Roman baths, voted as the second most beautiful Cathedral in Spain. The tour also includes a walk through the Barrio Humedo (Wet Neighborhood), which features hundreds of small streets full of churches and bars, the latter which offer free “tapas” with each drink. Dinner would be at Cocinandos, the only Michelin-starred restaurant in the city. The restaurant offers a fare that brings “a creative flair” to the table with menus that reflect the season.
