The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis has a trove of archival recordings dating back to 1987. With the launch of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s own Blue Engine Records, some of these significant recordings will begin to reach the public. The label plans new studio and live recordings as well. With these documents, the enduring artistry of current and former JLCO members, including trombonists and The Jazz Cruise artists Wycliffe Gordon and Andre Hayward, will receive much- deserved attention and be documented for posterity. The first Blue Engine release on Aug. 21 is “Live in Cuba,” from historic concerts the JLCO performed in Havana in 2010. Given the new diplomatic opening between Cuba and the United States, the release couldn’t be timelier.
