|For as long as we can remember Joe Rothman and John McClure have produced, hosted and nurtured the Newport Beach Jazz Party, entertaining a core of jazz enthusiasts from the Southern California area. Most of the time the event came on the heels of The Jazz Cruise and provided many of our guests with Round 2 of great music. Though Joe and John are maintaining their summer jazz events, 2018 was to have been the final Newport Beach Jazz Party, as they were looking to reduce their workload a bit.
Enter Paul and Sue Lowden, music lovers, entrepreneurs, and very successful entertainment producers from Las Vegas. Their path to assuming the reins of the Newport Beach Jazz Party ran right through the heart of Entertainment Cruise Productions. We first met the Lowdens on our somewhat ill-fated sailing of The Signature Jazz Cruise on Seabourn, the cruise that featured Diana Krall up until about 3 weeks before sailing. Diana became ill, could not sail and, on a dime, we turned around and bought out the balance of Chris Botti’s tour of Russia and brought his entire band to join us in the Mediterranean for the last 4 days of that cruise. We stayed in touch with the Lowdens after that, visited them in Las Vegas and participated in their dedicated efforts to work with Michael Feinstein and The Great American Songbook Foundation.
The Lowdens are now fixtures on The Jazz Cruise, and that’s where they met Joe Rothman. As fate would have it, the Lowdens summer in Laguna Beach and the friendship with Joe and John has grown through shared activities and, of course, music. So, when Joe and John told Paul about their decision to move on from the Newport Beach Jazz Party, Paul, an ever-active impresario, currently working with Jack Jones, and a longtime Hammond B3 player, could not resist the opportunity to continue to jazz up Newport Beach. Paul, his amazing wife Sue, and two sons, Chris and Paul IV, are all involved, so, just like The Jazz Cruise, this will be a family production.
Long story short, Paul and Sue’s first Jazz Party will be February 14 – 17, 2019, at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa. The Jazz Cruise and Entertainment Cruise Productions, both active sponsors of the party, urge you to check this out and attend this wonderful jazz party.
