Top of the Mark at InterContinental Mark Hopkins Celebrates 80 Years, Seeks Tales of the Squadron Bottle
Top of the Mark at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins has been a destination for active servicemen and veterans since World War II. The tradition of Top of the Mark’s Squadron Bottle began during this time, when servicemen would buy and leave a bottle in the care of the bartender so the next soldier from their squadron could enjoy a free drink; the only requirement being the soldier who finished the bottle had to buy a new one to leave behind. A journal, tucked safely behind the bar with the various Squadron Bottles, invited servicemen to leave their tributes and well wishes to their fellow comrades.
The tradition was lost until 2009 when Lieutenant Mike Hall of the U.S. Navy bought a bottle of whiskey and started a new journal. Ten years later, Top of the Mark has captured memories and toasts from World War II veterans, active service professionals, and their families.
For The Top of the Mark’s 80th anniversary in 2019, the venue is seeking more narratives from military professionals and their families, hoping to continue showcasing the stories of those who have honored Top of the Mark with their presence.
Active duty soldiers, veterans, friends or family members with stories about Top of the Mark are invited to write to email@example.com or call 415-616-6954.
Rambler Introduces Wild Wednesday Happy Hours
Hotel Zeppelin celebrates San Francisco’s countercultural tradition and serves as a tribute to the rock ’n’ roll legends of the world. The hotel’s restaurant, Rambler, features flavor-forward American fare with Italian tendencies, made with locally sourced, high quality goods. Occupying the space of the former Postrio restaurant by Wolfgang Puck, Rambler carries on the social energy that has existed here since 1989. At the weekly Wild Wednesday, 3-6 p.m., Rambler offers wild specials: $10 whiskey and cocktails, $7 wines and $5 wings. These specials join the menu’s local draft beers, the Rambler Burger, house fries, marinated olives, and more for a rebellious experience.
